Facebook Releases Video Messenger

Today Facebook released a Skype equivalent function for iOS and Android Messenger apps that allows video call. The launch comes at the head of a staggering growth in video views on Facebook. The platform currently serves 4 billion videos per day, up from 1 billion last September.


What this means for Facebook's online marketing strategy is yet unclear but targeted video production could become a powerful digital marketing tool when coupled with Facebook's unparalleled user data. Right now Facebook is not perceived as a video platform and users may be resistant to video marketing. Yet Facebook might soon have that leverage as users become more used to consuming video within the messenger app.

Video Messenger is not available in Facebook's web design. If video chat is successful on mobile phones then the functionality will surely be streamed into Facebook on browser. We can expect a video production focus on the platform’s web development as video views explode.
